Stand With Tammy

A Stroke Survivor’s Fight for the Care She Still Needs

Tammy’s recovery was cut short—not by her doctors,
but by an insurance decision.

We are sharing her story to raise awareness and
advocate for the care she deserves.

Her Story ~
On March 2, 2026, Tammy suffered a major stroke and was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where she was placed in the ICU. The following day, she experienced a brain hemorrhage, putting her in an even more critical condition.Tammy now lives with paralysis on her right side and is unable to speak in full sentences. On March 10th, she was transferred to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, where she began receiving essential physical and speech therapy. She was later moved to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Center in Golden Valley, where her care team advised she would need 10–11 weeks of intensive rehabilitation.

What Happened Next ~After only 24 days of treatment, Tammy’s insurance provider, UnitedHealthcare, refused to continue covering her stay.
Despite clear medical recommendations that she needed more time, Tammy was discharged prematurely.

This decision has had a profound impact on her recovery.

Where Tammy Is Now ~Tammy is now living with her sister Kim and her family in Iowa. While they are doing everything possible to support her recovery, the level of care she was receiving in rehabilitation—including multiple daily physical and speech therapy sessions—is no longer available to her.

Tammy is 60 years old, has never been married, and has no children. Her family and friends are now her full support system.

Why This Matters ~We are deeply concerned that this decision was driven by insurance limitations rather than medical necessity. Tammy has a long and difficult road ahead. Being discharged too soon puts her recovery, safety, and overall well-being at serious risk.

We believe no patient in this condition should be discharged against medical advice due to insurance limitations.

What We Are Doing ~We are actively advocating for Tammy by:— Reaching out to elected officials, including
Tom Emmer, Kelly Morrison, and Attorney General Keith Ellison
— Connecting with community groups and media outlets
— Raising awareness about how insurance decisions impact patient recovery
